Artist of the Week: Erin Fitzhugh Gregory

Spring inches its way toward us in North Carolina. You know it’s happening when the days begin chilly, but the long and gray weightiness of winter becomes forgettable by mid-afternoon.
My husband and I gave up alcohol for Lent this year, the forty days leading up to Easter Sunday. It’s been a challenging, thought-provoking time, as I absolutely adore a good gin and tonic. Especially on a sparkling, sunny afternoon.
Somehow during this time, the Pinterest algorithm brought me to the incredible work of artist Erin Fitzhugh Gregory of Fairhope, AL and Columbus, GA.
Y’all, I cannot get enough of her stuff.
Erin builds such delicious textures in her work. Her palette is bold, rich, bright and cheerful. Her work feels fresh, clean, familiar, nostalgic.
In these pieces in particular, I imagine swimming. Wading through the crushed icy toppings, tasting the sweet, juicy freshness of a summer orange or lime.
They remind me of feeling chilly, crisp and dewy grass between my toes in my grandmother’s yard in Alexandria (AL, too) on summer mornings as a kid. Beads of water refracting glimmers of mid-morning sun. If you look closely, you can just make out your reflection.
I’m so excited to see Erin’s work in person some time. Here are her current galleries.
See you next Monday!
